Tours de France – Stage 3

Thursday 10/9:
Saint-Martin-de-la-Place – Montreuil-Juigné

A more gentle day today, covering 56.6km, with the first 30km staying close to the Loire, before I say farewell to that major river and begin to ride across to the city of Angers.  Here, the route joins the ‘La Vélo Francette’ to begin the journey north rather than west.  One point of interest comes at the 33.4km mark, with the Authon Ferry crossing the Authon River (see picture below).  It appears to be a DIY job, where you pull the chain to bring the raft to you, wheel yourself on, pull yourself across and wheel off on the other side.
Then it’s through the outskirts of Angers, and on to the Château and the Maine River. After some time visiting Angers, the northward journey begins, quickly swapping from the Maine onto the Mayenne River for the closing 10km to the campsite at Montreuil-Juigné.
